Apps updates is necessary because each version comes with a security and features upgrade to give a better experience with using the app.

The way I know apps updates automatically, it happens whenever there's a new update available. You wouldn't know to update it first before it automatically updates.

That sounds strange because it's not supposed to work that way with auto update of apps but I will take your time word for it since I don't make use of iPhone 11 or any kind of iPhone at all.

I will admit, sometimes my phone even though it is set for apps to auto update, in some cases has not and I have been alerted by the app that I need to update to continue using the app.
