YouTube TV is raising its price once again, with the monthly subscription jumping from $72.99 to $82.99 starting in January. Subscribers were notified of the $10 increase via email on Thursday morning.

In its announcement, the Google-owned service cited rising content costs and investments in improving service quality as reasons for the hike. “We don’t make these decisions lightly, and we realize this has an impact on our members,” the email stated. The company also highlighted features like unlimited DVR storage, multiview for live events, and a vast library of on-demand content as key benefits of the platform.

This marks the second price increase in less than a year—YouTube TV raised its rate by 12% in March 2023. With the latest adjustment, the service will cost $82.99 per month, nearly 137% more than its original $34.99 price when it launched in 2017.

The hike puts YouTube TV on par with Hulu + Live TV, which raised its subscription price from $76.99 to $82.99 in October. Despite the increase, YouTube TV remains a significant revenue driver for Alphabet, Google’s parent company. While Alphabet doesn’t disclose YouTube TV’s specific performance, YouTube generated $8.9 billion in Q3 2023, with annual revenue exceeding $50 billion over the past 12 months. For context, Netflix reported approximately $38 billion in sales during the same period.

YouTube TV’s subscriber base has continued to grow, reaching 8 million users as of February 2023. Analysts project even greater growth, with MoffettNathanson predicting 12.4 million subscribers by the end of 2026, potentially making it the largest Pay TV service in the U.S., surpassing Comcast.

With subscription prices continuing to climb, how do you feel about the value of live TV streaming services like YouTube TV? Are they worth the cost?

Thats way too much for my liking.
That was my exact thought.
I just found out, what is the reason for such an exaggerated price increase?
It better include more content accessibility, that's for sure. To go from $10 to $82 without offering premium channels such as HBO or Showtime, or the likes, is just insane.

If it's the same service with nothing added, I would suspect there'd be more cancelations than what they're projecting for growth.
