It is common knowledge that all religions in the world preach the same things: Peace, love, empathy, good deeds and a good way of life. Then why are some religion seen in bad light while others are an object of mockery? Are the holy books misinterpreted purposely for personal or political gain?

Well, according to religious people, this is a prediction and a sign of the end times.

If you follow those doctrines, much of what's going on is a sign of the end. It seems like we're going downhill to hell pretty quickly.

Unless you don't believe in any of that, then you have your own reasons. I think many people tend to dislike religion because a lot of it is against change.

I don't hate organised religion, I just pity those schmucks who believe that a magic man in the clouds made everything. The evidence against there being god is weighty. The evidence for there being god is 'faith'. Faith, by it's definition, is belief without evidence. And when you frame it that way, it becomes hard to treat faith as anything other than wishful thinking. It’s one thing to say “I don’t know” and be okay with uncertainty. It’s another to claim certainty based on zero empirical support.

People wrap their entire worldview around an idea they were usually handed as kids, and then spend the rest of their lives defending it against reality. Meanwhile, we’ve got centuries of philosophy, science, and history that point to natural explanations for everything we once attributed to gods - thunder, disease, the sun rising.

But sure, keep offering thoughts and prayers whenever some wanker shoots up a school.

Well, one issue I have is the impossibility of people having salvation, based on what they think is the criteria. I know for sure my close family members were not church types; they got little chance of heaven, based on Baptist rules, honestly (and even less so with many other churches).

The challenge is that some people used religion to manipulate people. That's why there is a growing backlash towards religion nowadays. Some people see religion as exploiting the vulnerable. That's why they hate it.
