Can you do it? Some people just can't focus on it. I went to see Planet of the Apes - one of the new movies - at the cinema and they did subtitles for some of the apes talking. A young couple walked out. I thought it was pretty pathetic but when I think about it, I guess some people just can't handle watching and reading at the same time.

Others will choose dubbing over subtitles. Did you watch Squid Game in the original Korean or dubbed? The difference in the dialogue was obvious. You lose a lot of nuance when you don't use the original language.

When it comes to watching movies or even TV shows, I can handle subtitles, they do not seem to bother me and help a lot if I am struggling to understand or hear a TV show or movie.

I watched Squid Game and could have never watched it dubbed, it would have not felt the same so I watched it in Korean and had the English subtitles.

I am okay with both subtitles and dubbing as long as the later is on spot. Many a times there is a lag and that puts me off and I stop watching immediately. Subtitles may be difficult to follow if you solely concentrate on watching the images. I only read the subtitles initially to grasp the storyline and understand the relationship between characters and thereafter visuals suffices almost 90% of time.

There are usually, two motives for me watching a show/movie.

Motive 1: I am watching a show out of genuine interest. In that case, I turn on the subtitles and also focus on it when I want because I dont want to miss anything.

Motive 2: I want it played in the abgournd because it helps me concentrate on studying or on the work I do. In that case, the subtitles hardly matter to me.
