I once tried online dating and had a short relationship with someone in another country. Well, it was not even a relationship, we just communicated and never met in person. Gradually we stopped communicating and everything stopped. One prime reason was because I believed that it was not going to work. Do you think long distance relationship actually works?

I think it works for some people but not everyone. I tried a few long distance relationships in the past, the first girl I dated online was most likely catfishing me and I still don't even know who they were. This person never asked for money thankfully, but they were using a pr0n star's pictures and I didn't know it at the time lol. I figured it out after I "broke it off" with her. I kept asking her if I could talk to her on the phone, but she would always decline. The second girl I dated I started getting feelings for my ex at the time who I talked to in person, and became good friends with. I broke it off with the long distance girl, since I knew I needed a physical relationship on top of a romantic one. My ex at the time is my current wife and we've been together since.

I can actually relate to this. Back in the days when internet was getting popular in my place we used to hang out in chat room and use a girl's name and picture. We thought we were making fun of boys, but who knows they were also fooling us.

Long distance relationships can either work or fail depending on both partners. I was once in a long distance relationship and it lasted for a few years. I have seen cases where they were able to make it work.

When it comes to LDRs, one might hear often that it’s impossible, but in fact they are quite possible if both sides want it. That kind of relationships require trust and checking in with each other frequently.

Exactly, it's possible but both sides should be ready to make sacrifices, because there is going to be a lot of it in the future.

I think I've mentioned elsewhere that my first ever real girlfriend started off as an LDR.

We met through Twitter, I was 17 and she was 16. I lived in the UK, she in the US. We "dated" as such for about a year, and then I visited the US about halfway through and we met up and continued the relationship for another 6 months or so from there before eventually just slowing drifting apart due to circumstances in our lives that were beyond our control. It was sad though, that out of our year-long relationship, we only actually got to spend about 10 days of that year together. :(

What a bitter sweet experience it must have been for you. Both of you would know doubt wish that you were very close to each other that time. But you actually tried if you could put it off for a whole year.
As for the drifting apart, I guess some things can't be helped.
