There was talk a few years ago of chess being included in the Olympics. The reasoning was that chess is a highly competitive game played at the highest levels. However, the counterargument was that chess is not a sport but rather an activity. And again, the Olympics revolve around physical athletic ability rather than mental competitions.

So, do you think chess is as sport or activity and should the IOC consider it for upcoming competitions?

I think it would fair better than breakdancing... Many chess players are very into it and might tune in to watch a speed tournament to see which country is the best at chess.

That said, I think it's an activity or hobby more than a sport.

According to International Olympic Committee, Chess is a sport. More than 100 countries in the world have recognized chess as a sport. Sports is not just about your physical prowess, it is also about your mental strength

This came to mind learning that. It's been played worldwide for so long, that I'm not surprised to hear it though.

According to various sources, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has labeled chess as a sport and recognizes FIDE as an official federation. You are right.

And I agree sports should also be about mental strength. But, my point is that the Olympics revolve around physical athletic ability rather than mental competitions.

And this is why I think chess is not approved for the Olympics. Yet.
