Some say it was slavery, other say it was states' rights. What do you feel was motivating it? Did you feel it accomplished anything? Was the aftermath of it acceptable or not?
In my personal opinion, it was both of them, but slavery much more than states rights. Slavery was the dominant cause for the fight because there was some much tension and emotion behind it. This had been the case since the Missouri Compromise. It got to a point where South Carolina decided to secede. There was mixed feelings about this in the rest of the south, and some states had delegations to try and figure out what to do next. The breaking point came when Lincoln was elected president, and the south saw this as a threat to their current lifestyle, and they decided to secede as well. Jeff Davis was appointed president, and it was onward from there. Some say it was slavery, other say it was states' rights. What do you feel was motivating it?
I think it did accomplish some things, but at a very heavy price (estimated 800,000 American deaths). For one, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, abolishing slavery, and it also asserted that the United States meant business, and successful revolutions couldn't happen so easily.Did you feel it accomplished anything?
I think the aftermath was acceptable for about 10 years after that until... segregation. Then it was basically slavery all over again, the laborers got paid, but had such a high amount of debt that it was very similar to slavery. Was the aftermath of it acceptable or not?
Well, no bull-whippings is a big difference.I think the aftermath was acceptable for about 10 years after that until... segregation. Then it was basically slavery all over again, the laborers got paid, but had such a high amount of debt that it was very similar to slavery.
Definitely, the root cause for the north wasn't slavery, I think. Slavery some sort of side-issue to justify it morally. The US civil war is a complex situation but the major cause is slavery and state rights. The good thing about the war is that it brought an end to slavery but the aftermath was even worse because that was when we started having racial tensions and the rise of segregation.
"We have to stop these rebellious southerners and get them back to the Union."What do you figure was the justification for the north?
But ignoring slavery arguments, isn't that against free-will choice.? It reminds me of Trump's recent doings with Canada."We have to stop these rebellious southerners and get them back to the Union."
Northerners were consumers of cotton, tobacco etc..Basically, the Southern states and the northern states were in a serious fight over slavery because the southern states relied heavily on agriculture and slavery to expand that period of time. The northern states abolished slavery which did not go well with them. That was when the war started.
