I've got quite a lot of experience in mobile games, and to some extent, I can tell you the essential features that a mobile game should have without blinking an eye.

There are a huge number of mobile games out there, but most of them have lost their appeal because they don't have what it takes to thrive in the highly competitive gaming landscape.

For me, a core mobile game should have a very compelling storyline and best controls. What about you?

I think it's essential for mobile games to have a lot of tasks/rewards to keep you busy. Level up system is also a must to keep the players glued to the game.
Definitely tasks, cause the game is essentially over without them. And a point on rewards, those are what keep you playing.

For as long as the game has more tasks and more rewards, you're never going to quit until it just gets old. So, these are the two essential features of a successful mobile app for sure.

Speaking about controls when it comes to mobile games, it's the biggest flaw which needs a serious attention for it to be upgraded on because no matter how good a mobile game is, the control can never be rated on the same level with console or PC games.

Also, they need to work on better models for monetization of those games because a lot of them are getting it wrong with how they use aggressive microtransactions and ads in the games.

I go for graphics. If the graphics are not very good, I do not find the game to be interesting. I like realistic graphics. This is one reason why I did not like Fortnite even though it is a popular game

I completely agree with you too. In as much as I'm also a fan of a good storyline and gameplay, the game's graphics needs to be good as well. It's why I appreciate the use of so much improved game engine in development of video games.

The most successful mobile games understand a crucial principle: they must respect the player's time and provide instant gratification while maintaining long-term engagement. If there is no gratification, players lose interest and choose other options.

The best games are also able to maintain player motivation through well-designed progression mechanics. Think of these systems like a journey. The game should constantly entice players with the promise of growth, discovery, and personal achievement.

Reward loops are also crucial. Imagine a game that provides regular, predictable rewards that feel genuinely satisfying and not just arbitrary points but meaningful acknowledgments of a player's effort.

These rewards act like continuing dopamine hits, creating a positive feedback loop that encourages players to keep playing.

For example, a player might receive a unique weapon after completing a challenging mission, or unlock a special character skin after consistent gameplay. These rewards make each achievement feel significant and personal. This lead to players wanting to playing the game more and more.

Without any kind of reward in any video game, there's nothing much that's going to motivate you to keep playing for a long time. It's going to feel like you're wasting your time on a game which isn't worth it.

It's not even just having rewards, it's the type of reward too. If the rewards do not feel like they are worth the effort, players will get frustrated and leave.

I completely agree!! Some rewards would definitely feel useless if they are not creative enough in the design. This is why when it comes to developing games, it shouldn't be rushed so they do well in covering for everything.
