Meta’s social network, Threads, now has 275 million monthly active users (MAUs), the company said on Sunday.

“Yesterday we crossed 275M monthly active users on @Threads. A big thank you to everyone who’s helped us get this far. There’s a lot more to do, and plenty of things to fix, but there’s something exciting about this place,” said Adam Mosseri, the Meta executive who heads Threads and Instagram.

Threads, which launched in July 2023 in a bid to capitalize on the millions of users leaving X after Elon Musk bought the platform, has rapidly gained users and has now become one of the biggest text-first social networks. The platform reached the 150 million MAU mark in April and 200 million MAUs in August, meaning it has gained 75 million active users in just three months.

Last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the company’s Q3 2024 post-results conference call that a million people sign up to Threads every day.

While the platform’s user acquisition is trending upwards, Threads is facing a number of moderation issues that have frustrated users.

I'm wondering how they calculated that figure.

Threads are often injected into my Facebook feed, even though I don't have an account there.

Does my view of that count me as an active user? Or would clicking on it as it's brilliantly disguised to appear like an image or Facebook post — but not signing up — count as an active user?

I'm going to say that they're being generous with that count as nobody I know uses Threads.

I think they’re inflating the numbers. Especially since I don’t hear too many people talking about Threads. They’re more than likely counting active users that come across threads’ content on Facebook and Instagram.

They definitely are, and I'm thinking it has to do with the Threads preview on the normal Facebook feed. They could've at least been reasonable with their inflated number, like, beat BlueSky's number and work on trying to catch X still... but they had to jump all the way to 275 million?! No way in hell are there that many, and if there are, a lot are accidental clicks into what is believed a Facebook post.

It's almost like they took 10% of Facebook's AUM to get Threads' AUM too. 🤔

Like, they had a meeting about how many AUM there are and some genius just whipped out his calculator and got the 10% figure. Called brilliant. And given a promotion.

I have an account but I don't use it. One of the main problems with using social media is you need to build a lot of followers to actually benefit from it and it is really hard for everyday people to build followers.

For celebrity it is easy, therefore, no matter what platform they join, they will always have people eager to follow. One of the best example is how Ronaldo was able to get a Diamond button in less than 48 hours

There’s a new report from TechCrunch featuring a chart by Similarweb, and Threads’ traffic numbers don’t align with their user statistics.

They’ve definitely been busted.

Threads just didn't resonate with me. I have it installed on my phone but haven't explored it yet. I mean, 275 million monthly users is no joke. That's a huge progress. I might have to take a look once more. Thanks for sharing this.

I was so surprised with the level of success achieved by Threads. This tells us that it's becoming more popular each day. It’s a cool platform to type and share messages with my friends.

It’s really not. Their users stats don’t add up to their traffic numbers.

It’s not as popular and successful as they claim.
