This has become an age-old debate. So many people believe that 4-4-2 is better, while some people believe that 4-3-3 takes the lead. Who takes the lead when it comes to formations? From my personal viewpoint, I think that 4-4-2 seems to offer more defensive play, while 4-3-3 seems to give dominance in the midfield.

I think players' skill is more important than team formation. It also depends on whether you want to defend or attack. The team formation should entirely depend on who you are playing with.

I would prefer a 4-3-3 formation over a 4-4-2. The midfield is compact with a 3 man midfield than with a two man midfield. And if you have good wing forwards that has mastered traditional and inverted wing play, such a team would be a joy to watch.

Such formation has more control in the midfield area, which might be a plus for any team. With three central midfielders available, there are more opportunities for a pass and more movement than the opposition can handle.

If you are have good inverted wingers, you would be wasting them away playing a 4-4-2 formation. Inverted wingers in a 4-3-3 formation carry goal threat far more than in a 4-4-2 formation.
