discuss Put off by subtitles?

This is a thread to discuss anything related to movies.
I can only watch foreign films if they're dubbed.

However, due to the TV volume being so low, as I tend to unwind and watch movies at night, I'll also need the subtitles. This is because you learn to read lips at that volume and kind of put pieces together if you can't pick up a word from the sound. By having the subtitles on, you can quickly fill that gap and understand what was spoken as opposed to skipping a few seconds back.

Well, that's my case anyway.

I like to watch movies with subtitles instead of dubbed ones if they are in the languages I don't comprehend. When I am watching movies, I don't feel like knowing each and every dialogues being spoken, the facial expressions, body languages etc can tell a lot of things.
I completely agree with you. This is particularly so because subtitles are very useful when watching a movie in a different language. If one cannot catch the dialogue, one will lose something following the story and it might make it uninteresting to watch.

Even when you are watching the movies in the languages you can understand, you might not be able to comprehend all spoken dialogues., I don't think it is important to know all spoken language. Movies are visual content and you can understand so many things form visuals.

When I read books, I need to understand the meaning behind every words and phrases, however, when I watch movies it is not just the audio that attracts me, I also look for visuals, so unlike you I don't feel the necessity of understanding everything.

I quite agree with that, because watching movies, good visuals are crucial. This is why it is easy for me to see why it wouldn’t bother you if you didn’t get every subtitle. At some other times, some of the scenes may rely on the characters’ body language, in which case subtitles are of little importance.
