NFL legend Randy Moss will be stepping away from his punditry duties on ESPN for an unknown health issue, the network announced on Friday.
In a statement shared on X, ESPN revealed that the former wide receiver would be taking an “extended time” off from his role on “Sunday NFL Countdown” to focus on a personal health challenge.
“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable part of the team, consistently bringing his insight and passion to ‘Countdown,’” the network’s statement read. “He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he’s ready.”
Over the weekend, Moss posted two videos on Instagram explaining his recent choice to wear tinted sunglasses during TV appearances. In his brief appearance at the top of ESPN’s coverage of “Sunday NFL Countdown,” he shared, “I just wanted to let you all know that me and my wife, me and my family, we’re dealing with something internally. I have some great doctors around me, and I couldn’t miss the show; I wanted to be here with you guys.”
The analyst seemed upbeat and joked with his colleagues, saying he felt “great.” Concern had grown recently when viewers noticed his eyes appeared yellow, prompting him to start wearing sunglasses on TV.
While Moss hasn’t revealed any specifics about what he’s battling, he hasn’t commented publicly since ESPN’s statement on Friday.
The NFL legend played 14 seasons in the league, most notably with the Minnesota Vikings and the New England Patriots. He’s considered one of the greatest wide receivers in the sport’s history, earning first-team All-Pro honors four times and leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns on five occasions. Over his stellar career, Moss amassed 15,292 receiving yards and 156 touchdowns.
On Friday, the Vikings responded to ESPN’s statement with a message on social media that read: “Praying for our guy @RandyMoss.”
