Relationship break ups can be mentally draining depending on what led to the separation. The person who's more deeply in love will be affected badly which makes life very difficult for him or her. If you've ever had a relationship ended, the shock will never go away easily.

If my wife broke it off with me, as madly in love with her as I am, I don't think I could recover.

I don't see me doing anything stupid, but I would have a void and would hurt for the rest of my life. I don't think I'd ever move on from that. I love her more than anything.

For me, I would always recover from a breakup the following day. I don't really have the time to sit and sulk for one relationship that didn't work out. There are always ladies lurking around my life that I can always date almost instantly.
