On May 30, 2024, Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign. That means he is a criminal.

Being entirely unsurprised that a man who's businesses have filed for bankruptcy six times between 1991 and 2009 is corrupt, I do wonder what my American friends feel this says about the rule of law in society. If a crook can occupy the highest office in the land, what sort of example does that set?

It is quite unsettling to think that anyone found guilty of a multitude of felony charges would have access to the highest public office. The rule of law is a bedrock principle in a democracy, and the reason it is frightening is that this might well undermine public trust in the system.

This is exceedingly concerning as an example that will be planted in the minds of aspiring leaders and citizens. Having a president committing crime and not being punished is a big concern.

I’m so surprised that the almighty US could also turn deaf hears to the laws of the land even in the public. I believe it is best that the rule of law be obeyed in order to hold anyone accountable irrespective of the position or status they occupy in the society.

That's your best argument? Other people are also corrupt so corruption is okay? Is this an agreement from you that Trump is corrupt? You think that's okay? Whatever happened to holding our leaders to higher standards of behaviour?

That trial was also a political attempt at getting him out of the presidential race at the time, which backfired. It was a sham, a farce.

I don't really care about his criminal record. That's not what's burning me up. Instead, it's this whole macho thing coming from him, and coming from someone unwilling to be macho when it meant something (Vietnam).

He didn't go. He wimped out. Well, he had a medical excuse, but it just seems like the typical "rich boy thing", though Ted Nugent (who wasn't rich then) also had a medical excuse.

Give it time. I'm sure if he had a medical excuse, it was probably a medical excuse (we can't know for sure because of HIPPA).

Given that he was the first President to step foot in North Korea, I don't think he has a problem visiting a nation if he is capable of doing so.

Edit: I just realized this was about "draft dodging". Disregard that. We can't be certain that he dodged the draft, either. There were many people that wanted to fight after 9/11, and a lot weren't medically cleared, having to pack up, sad, and go home. They couldn't do the duck walk (flat feet) or other issues that arose during MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Stations).

That's hearsay, all hearsay from non-credible sources, i.e., from people that had a vendetta against him (and even one that arguably committed treason while under his command).

The clips used in this news report say otherwise. He is acting respectful for where he is. You will have to show me video to prove this point.

Whatever our ideas are, he has been pronounced guilty by a court of law after following all the due procedure established by law.

In that sense, lets call a spade just as a spade. He is a criminal by virtue of the law in his country.

While we need to debate separately if it is appropriate for leaders found guilty of crime be instated in the highest office of the country, we have to note that the same law makes no such bar/restrictions regarding having him as the President. He comes woth the backing of the people of America and hence, cannot be quested as far as his legitimate claim to Presidency is concerned.

I am not surprised. Anything can happen in politics. In 1997, a man in our country raised a war against the state, the 10 years bloody war took lives of 17 thousand people. Thinking that he cannot win the state, he made a peace agreement with the state, contested in general elections and became prime minister. So, far he has become prime minister for three times, currently he is the leader of opposition in the parliament and admits that of of 17 thousand people killed, he can take responsibility for 5000 deaths. Look at the politics, someone who admits killing 5000 people continues to remain free and even more gets elected for the office.
