How do you feel about it? What themes and mods do you like? How would you compare it to other software?

My take is that it's not very much different than phpBB, but somebody on here might be able to disagree. Anyway, though, the math notation mod for it doesn't left justify, so I am glad I went with phpBB, but that's not dissing SMF, generally speaking.

I used SMF for quite a while. The original AAF was first installed on SMF and stayed that way for the longest time.

In all honesty, out of all the free software for forums, SMF seems to be the one updated the most. They even made their software responsive in the last couple of updates.

But they're still not as widely used as they once were.

Is the default theme mobile responsive? I thought it was, but maybe it requires another theme.

It is now. One of their latest updates made the forum mobile responsive.

But I still think it needs more work - all software in the forum world does. it all needs to be mobile-first during development.

It's also noteworthy to mention that most mobile-first sites make desktop use even easier, IMO.

Simple machine form SMF is another popular forum software and this software shares a lot of similarities with phpbb because it also offers a wide range of themes and modes. It also has some wonderful features like the built-in moderation tools.
One advantage it has over phpBB is one-click mod, theme, and software update installation.
