The score for Dune: Part Two won’t be competing for an Oscar in 2025. Despite Hans Zimmer winning Best Original Score for Dune: Part One at the 2022 Oscars, his latest work doesn’t meet Academy rules.

According to Variety, the issue is the Academy's rule on pre-existing music. For sequels, no more than 20% of the score can reuse themes from previous films. Zimmer’s score for Dune: Part Two incorporates too much of the 2021 film’s music, making it ineligible.

Zimmer, a 12-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner (for The Lion King and Dune), might not get another Academy nod for Dune: Part Two, but it could still be recognized at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, or even the Grammys.

The 2025 Oscars will take place in March, and fans will have to wait and see how Dune: Part Two fares in other award categories.

I had heard of this news but did not know the exact reason. I think I agree with the Academy's rule. If you are reusing from your past work, how can you submit it as an original work to be considered for an award
