Abraham Lincoln said "Democracy is a government of the people, by the people, for the people." It sounds pretty awesome right. According to Karl Max Communism is "a society in which everyone shares the benefits of labor equally, and eliminates the class system through redistribution of on income." This also sounds pretty awesome right.
Now, let's discuss about what exactly went wrong

What went wrong is that communism still exists.

Why should somebody who studies to become a doctor have to give up the benefit of being wealthy so that a high-school dropout can make the same? Now, that might be the extreme end as an example, but it should make one think.

Having a system like that disincentivizes output, leading to an ultimate collapse of society.

I once read about a doctor in Cuba who rides taxi at night so that he can make additional income to enjoy luxury. You spend many years in a medical college and if you still cannot afford a quality life, why do you have to waste your time studying. However, we also need to see inherent problem that sometimes democracy cannot address. Some groups and communities in certain societies are systematically subjugated for hundreds, probably thousands of years, Communism usually address to this segment of the society. This is the reason why communism grew where there was poverty.

The end result: North Korea!
Exactly. So my answer to this question of what went wrong is that the people still allow communism to exist, or forget what it entails and let it run rampant again.

The people do have the power, just look at Syria right now. They lost a lot, and will need to rebuild, but the people took the power back.

People have the power to change the regime. In our country we did that multiple times, we fought against autocracy multiple times and we won. We even did not allow Communist to topple the state. But sadly in many countries, where people have been subjugated for a long time they no longer have courage to do that. Even when they revolt, they cannot push towards logical conclusion just like we can see in Myanmar.

At the same time it is also correct that due to prolonged suppression of opposition, people tend to lose their spirit to fight against dictatorial rulers and therefore it is difficult for them to overthrow their rulers. Myanmar example shows this.

Yeah, that's what I think. Interestingly, sometimes people also revolt against liberal regimes and then establish rouge nations. That's what happened in Iran and that is what happening in Bangladesh.

The truth is that communism only exists in paper. It is not practical in real life. There would always be a classy system. Humans are not equal even by birth. Democracy is oppressive, I know. But we must have to agree that it is practical.
