discuss Beyond social media? What's next?

A thread covering the latest news on trends, groundbreaking technologies, and digital innovations reshaping the tech landscape.
This is a great question and something I will admit, I have not thought about. I guess with how long social media has been active for now and how popular it still is, in my mind we may not see anything else beyond that but we never know exactly what is around the corner or in the future.

Sitting and thinking now, I don't honestly feel we could top social media but who knows what idea someone could come up with and it be the next big thing.

In the 80s/90s - we had BBS systems. Early 2000s was chat and forums. Now it's social media.

What's next?

Will it just stay social media or do you think a new innovation in socialization online will be invented?

What do you all think?
I think we'll see a lot more sites connecting to the fediverse, instead of one standard social media app. The fediverse is a connection of various sites that can interact, talk to each other and see all the content from each platform that's connected to it. Threads, Mastodon, Nodebb, Discourse and a few other platforms are currently connected to it. Wordpress plans to intergrate it soon with Tumblr. Ghost, the blogging platform recently connected to it as well.

I see a rise of independant platforms coming up that'll probably knock off regular platforms as user's seek alternatives. Forums will continue to do well, but I expect a lot of them to see major growth soon. Especially with some social media platforms implementing AI systems that use fake accounts and responding to content.

I guess we're talking about what they've been calling web 3.0, right?

That seemed like it was a big thing back when NFTs were a big thing. But now it seems like it has faded away. Maybe we're not ready for it?

All the decentralized apps aren't yet taking off like the others are still going strong on. Bsky was cool to mess with until you realize it's mainly just a place to vent about hating one side of the political realm.

That's correct. It's an aspect of the web 3.0 era. Bluesky enables you to set your own feeds and mute words. I really don't see any political content on my feed.

web 3.0
The control of the new phase of the internet is shifting more towards the user instead of big tech companies. People are generally becoming more aware of their internet usage and what they want to share or not. This has led to a group of opponents and a call for more ownership from the end-user on the internet. While Web3 is still conceptual and not fully developed, steps are being taken to achieve greater ownership on the internet. Additionally, there is Web 3.0, which, despite the similar name, has significant differences. Web3 is fundamentally a blockchain-based system focusing on transactions between users. Web 3.0 envisions the future internet as a decentralized system based on protocols, aligning with its original design.

Web3, also known as Web 3.0, represents a vision for a decentralized and open version of the internet. Built on technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrencies, Web3 aims to give users greater control over their data and online activities.

In contrast, Web 2.0 refers to the current version of the internet, characterized by user-generated content, social media, and collaborative platforms. However, Web 2.0 is often referred to as the centralized internet due to its reliance on platform-controlled ecosystems.

The Fediverse (short for federated universe) is a collection of interconnected social networking services that communicate using shared protocols, such as ActivityPub. These platforms allow users on different websites to exchange status updates, multimedia files, and other content seamlessly across the network.

I have always known that web 3.0 is the future of the internet and I'm so happy to see the kind of progress that has been recorded so far. Decentralization and blockchain technology has made this possible as it gives users more control over their content and more security. Web 3.0 will revolutionize the way we interact online because it gives us autonomy.
