I suggest beginners get familiar with either WordPress or Blogger so easily because it is simply to use and modified. WordPress uses many free themes and plugins available, such as SEO and social sharing. For bloggers, it is quite suitable.

I haven't run a blogging (network) in some time, but I would still go with WordPress.

I have a lot of unlimited-use lifetime licenses for themes that have been updated along with WordPress, so I would use those above a free template.

That said, a free template for just beginning your blog isn't going to hurt as the most important aspect of a blog is its content and whether it's interesting or engaging enough for a user to stay on your page longer than 30 seconds.

I don't think there is any replacement for Wordpress. I have tried Ghost and Hugo as well but Wordpress is superior.
