Amazon Prime Video is rolling out a new AI-driven feature called X-Ray Recaps, aimed at making it easy for viewers to jump back into shows at any point. Currently in beta, this feature offers on-demand text summaries tailored to exactly where users left off, even if it's been a while since they last watched.
X-Ray Recaps is designed for the many viewers who may have missed an episode, taken a break between seasons, or just need a quick refresher. The recaps can provide updates at different levels—covering anything from part of an episode to entire seasons, and it’s personalized down to the minute so users get only the most relevant updates without spoilers.
Powered by Amazon’s Bedrock AI tech, the feature utilizes models trained on Amazon SageMaker to scan video content, creating concise, spoiler-free summaries. According to Amazon, the recaps highlight cliffhangers, major plot twists, and key moments to ensure viewers are quickly brought back up to speed.
Currently, X-Ray Recaps are only available on Amazon Fire TV devices in the U.S. and cover original series by Amazon MGM Studios, including titles like The Boys, Daisy Jones and the Six, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and The Wheel of Time. However, Amazon plans to expand the feature to more devices by the end of the year.
Adam Gray, Prime Video's VP of Product, says the goal of X-Ray Recaps is to "directly address a common problem customers face when streaming content: forgetting where they left off." Viewers can access the feature through the X-Ray option on Prime Video’s series pages or while watching a show, building on the existing X-Ray tool that already provides cast and production info.
